Pennsylvania Total Loss Appraisal Clause

Pennsylvania Total Loss Guide

Understanding Total Loss Valuations, Actual Cash Value, Appraisal Rights, and Vehicle Value Disputes in Pennsylvania

When a vehicle is declared a total loss in Pennsylvania, the disagreement is often not about whether the vehicle should be repaired.

The disagreement is usually about value.

Many vehicle owners are surprised to learn that the settlement amount offered by an insurance company is not based on the vehicle's original purchase price, loan balance, or replacement cost. Instead, insurers are required to determine the vehicle's Actual Cash Value (ACV) immediately before the loss occurred.

Understanding how total loss claims are evaluated in Pennsylvania can help vehicle owners better understand the settlement process, identify potential valuation concerns, and make informed decisions when reviewing a total loss offer.

Pennsylvania Total Loss Threshold

Pennsylvania does not use a fixed percentage total loss threshold.

Instead, Pennsylvania utilizes what is commonly referred to as the Total Loss Formula (TLF).

Under the Total Loss Formula, an insurer may determine that a vehicle is a total loss when:

Cost of Repairs + Salvage Value ≥ Actual Cash Value (ACV)

Unlike states that require a vehicle to reach a specific percentage of damage before being declared a total loss, Pennsylvania focuses on the economic feasibility of repair.

Example

Actual Cash Value (ACV): $20,000

Repair Cost: $15,500

Salvage Value: $5,000

Total Loss Formula:

$15,500 + $5,000 = $20,500

Because the combined repair cost and salvage value exceed the vehicle's actual cash value, the insurer may determine the vehicle is a total loss.

What Is Actual Cash Value (ACV)?

Actual Cash Value, commonly referred to as ACV, represents the fair market value of a vehicle immediately before the loss occurred.

Understanding how total loss claims are evaluated allows vehicle owners to better review a settlement offer, identify potential concerns, and make informed decisions regarding their claim.

At Cardwell Claim Authority, our role is not to create value.
