How to Invoke the Appraisal Clause

Step 1 – Review Your Policy

Confirm your insurance policy contains an appraisal clause.

Step 2 – Notify the Insurance Company

Send written notice to the insurance carrier advising that you are invoking the appraisal clause.

Include:
• Claim number
• Vehicle information
• Reason for the dispute

Step 3 – Hire an Independent Appraiser

Select an experienced independent appraiser to represent your interests during the appraisal process.

Step 4 – Appraisal Review

Both appraisers review:
• Vehicle value
• Repair estimates
• Comparable vehicles
• Supporting documentation

The appraisers will attempt to agree on the amount of loss.

Step 5 – Umpire Process (If Needed)

If the appraisers cannot agree, an umpire may review the dispute and assist with reaching a final decision depending on policy language.

Typical Timeframes

Most appraisal matters resolve within several weeks depending on:
• Carrier response times
• Vehicle complexity
• Documentation availability
